Albert Charles Lewis Gotthilf Gunther (1830-1914) was born and educated in Germany, moving to England with his mother in 1857. He joined the Zoology Department of the British Museum the same year, and progressed to the post of Keeper of Zoology in 1875. He specialised on fish and reptiles. Robert William Theodore Gunther (1869-1940), Albert's son, studied zoology at Oxford University, and became Tutor in natural science at Magdalen College. He was a pioneering student of the history of science. Albert Everard Gunther (b.190?) was the son of Robert.
