Administrative / biographical background:

Charles Davies Sherborn (1861-1942) was an enthusiastic geologist as a young man, carrying out research on microfossils and the geology of southeast England. He became convinced of the importance of bibliographical and historical research as the foundation of taxonomy. He spent over forty years compiling Index animalium (1902-1933), that comprised a complete list of generic and specific names published between 1738 and 1850, with a reference to the publication in which each name first appeared. The General Library of the Natural History Museum was his base, though he was never a salaried member of staff.
