Title: | Temporary Indian Army Appointments |
Description: |
During the First World War the supply of regular British officers for the Indian Army, entering via Sandhurst or (from 1915) Wellington or Quetta, proved inadequate for the needs of a greatly expanded establishment. Temporary Commissions or commissions in the Indian Army Reserve of Officers were therefore granted to British Army officers, NCOs and enlisted men of the required educational standard. Applications were received in the India Office Military Department, where they were detached from the files of Military Home Correspondence (IOR:L/MIL/6) and were kept in two numerical sequences, 1-2862 (Temporary Commissions) and 1-1800 (IARO). These applications have now been arranged in volumes with the referenc numbers L/MIL/9/435-623. They provide useful background information on applicants, including birth certificates and their British Army service. From the latter it may be possible to trace further details among War Office Records. |
