Description:

Copies of 2 letters written by one of the Y.M.I. in C. Company at Spion Kop to his wife

Describing the manoeuvres employed in the battle. Describes the battle as not so bad as Colenso which would never be surpassed. Saved by the charge of the Irish Fusileers. The actual ascent of Spion Kop and subsequent battle was terrible. The enemy's guns were mounted so as to fire systematically amongst the English who had no guns, and the carnage was horrible. The Y.M.I. held the position while everyone else was retreating. Boers have a gun firing 10 11b. shells in 10 seconds. At dusk, after a days fighting, the Scottish Rifles came to the rescue. 110 in his regiment killed. Captain Petre in his Co. was killed. Asks for the letters to be copied and sent to his mother as he hasn't time to write to her.
