Letters from Adeliza Maria Petre with some from Henry Petre her husband to her mother, Mrs. Howard, 47 Brook Street London and Corby Castle, Carlisle and Grey Stoke Castle, Cumberland

 

Mostly chat about tours and clothes, but elections in Carlisle where Philip [Howard] may stand (8th July 1830) and is elected (Aug. 2nd 1830). Letters from her on a continental tour Oct. 1830 - meeting disbanded Swiss troops from Corsica (Oct.1830). In Paris just before the trial of Polignac and Peyronnet. Industrial unrest nr. Dunkenhalgh Lancs. Weavers breaking frames etc. and at starvation level (23rd July 1831). The railroad to Dunkenhalgh sometimes goes at 32 mph. (1831). Alterations at Dunkenhalgh (Jan.1832), gardens laid out by Mr. Gilpin. Mr. Lythgoe to have a years retirement at Stonyhurst which will be a trial to him (Feb.1832). Announcing the birth of "a nasty animal, a boy" to be named Oswald William (16th Aug.1832). The writer died 19th Sept. 1833 after the birth of a son and having scarletfever. [1 bundle]
