Thomas Eyre to FFT.

 

Reporting on Francis's attitude to work and his diligence and good behaviour. In the middle of moving to Ushaw. Will be pleased to see Henry at Ushaw. William not very good at literary studies. Francis and Wm. refused a stay at Biddleston with the Selby family. Attributes the name "Ushaw" to the yew tree in the grounds of the farm bought for the College - "yew shade". [N.B. true derivation is "Wulfscaga" or "Wolves wood").
