Administrative / biographical background:

Until this firm closed in 1961, the premises it occupied at 44, Market Place, had been a family chemist's business since the 1820's. A Samuel Cooper, chemist and druggist, had premises there in 1827 and the business continued in the Cooper family until about 1878. From 1849 to c.1870 the firm was Cooper and Pettifor, and for a short time from c.1878 to 1885 it was known as Cooper and Sturgess. After 1888 William Sturgess took over completely, and the business stayed in this family until 1961.
