Administrative / biographical background:

Archibald Turner came to Leicester c. 1840 and established himself as a "fancy hosiery manufacturer" in Humberstone Gate by 1846. In 1849 he is recorded as owning an India Rubber business, Turner and Pegg in Hill Street and by 1855 is listed as being an elastic web manufacturer in Belgrave Gate. Several patents and a boom in business led to the construction of a new factory on King Richards Road entitled 'Bow Bridge Works'. The firm grew to be the largest in Leicester, itself the leading area for elastic web manufacture. After his death in 1876, the company continued under James Mitchell, Padmore Richard Taylor and William Pegg. Archibald's son, Luke had disagreed with his father over business matters, in the 1850's and by 1858 had established his own firm manufacturing elastic web, in Deacon Street. Family interest in the firm deteriorated after the First World War, and business continued to decline, until in 1963 the firm went into voluntary liquidation.
