This collection of papers comprises documents relating to the Cradock-Hartopp branch of the Hartopp family. It contains papers from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries, with the bulk of the collection relating to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The nucleus of the collection is formed by the papers of Sir Edmund Cradock Hartopp, 1st baronet, which cover the period 1777-1839. These papers contain much correspondence and relate to his general affairs, estate administration and his political career. The political papers are of particular interest, as Sir Edmund was elected Member of Parliament for the County of Leicester in the election of November 1798, retaining his seat until he resigned in 1806. This collection contains many papers relating to the 1798 election and its associated costs, and a large number of letters pledging support to Sir Edmund, including correspondence from the Duke of Rutland and his family. Also included are papers concerning Parliamentary business, including petitions and requests to Sir Edmund to support particular bills before Parliament. Sir Edmund Cradock Hartopp was born Edmund Bunney, son of Joseph Bunney of Newark, co. Notts. by Mary, daughter of Edmund Cradock. After marrying Anne Hurlock, who was the only surviving heir to this branch of the Hartopp family (see Pedigree 1) he assumed the surnames of Cradock and Hartopp. He was created a baronet on 12 May 1796.

Some papers of the Cradock family have survived amongst this collection. These consist mainly of title deeds to property acquired by the Cradocks, some of which later devolved upon Sir Edmund Cradock Hartopp. Notable amongst these is a large accumulation of title deeds relating to the manors of Aston Flamville and Sharnford dating from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The collection also contains some papers of the Unwin family, who were related to the Cradocks by the marriage of Elizabeth Cradock to William Unwin c.1767. These papers relate to the marriage settlement, the death of William Unwin in 1774, and the financial arrangements for his widow and children.

The Bunney family papers mainly concern the financial affairs of Joseph Bunney (father of Sir Edmund). There are also some papers relating to the manor of Newbold Verdon, which he purchased in 1767, and a small accumulation relating to the marriage of Mary Ann Bunney to William Bankes c.1780.

The Hurlock family papers preserved here relate mainly to the executorship of the will of Mrs. Ann Bridges of Avington, co. Southampton, widow, who died in 1763. Mrs. Bridges was an aunt to Sarah Hurlock née Hartopp (see Pedigree 1) and members of the Hurlock family played a part in the executorship of her will.

The remainder of the collection comprises small accumulations of the papers of Sir Edmund Cradock Hartopp, 2nd baronet and Sir William Edmund Cradock Hartopp, along with some miscellanea.
