Administrative / biographical background:

This hospital, situated at the junction of Warton Street and East Beach, was opened in August 1871, built and equipped largely at the instigation of John Talbot Clifton. Though the hospital was extended and enlarged to include a proper operating theatre (1905) and an X-ray department (1925), it was rebuilt in the 1920s and reopened in October 1930 with a new Maternity Ward. A Children's Ward was opened in December 1933.

The hospital was intended for the benefit of the poor suffering from sickness or accident who could not be cared for in their own homes. It was financed by voluntary subscriptions and small payments by patients, who had to be recommended by an annual subscriber.

It was governed by a Committee of Management until the creation of the National Health Service to 1948, when administrative control was taken over by the Blackpool and Fylde Hospital Management Committee (from 1974 the Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde District Health Authority).

Most of the non-patient records catalogued here concern the pre-NHS hospital: for records of the Blackpool and Fylde Hospital Management Committee see HRBP 3; family and other records of R Cunliffe Shaw, a consultant surgeon at the hospital from the 1930s, can be found at DDS. Lytham UDC Hospital Committee minutes 1879-1903 are at MBLS 2/22.

For a history of the hospital see Lytham Hospital 1871-1971, available in the Searchroom and at HRLY 18/6.
