Because the collection of papers was not in any discernable order or arrangement when received at the Lancashire Record Office, it has been necessary to impose an order based on current standards for cataloguing Landed Family and Estate archives. The collection of papers by in large covers the period from the late 13th century to the 18th century and consists mostly of title deeds and legal papers although there are a small number of family and estate papers. Deeds and papers relating to property have been catalogued together as Title Deeds and for the purposes of this catalogue include leases. These deeds have been arranged by place in alphabetical order, then under settlements, agreements and legal papers.

This collection of papers relating to the Standish Family of Duxbury was purchased at auction from Stride & Son, Auctioneers and Valuers, Chichester [by the Friends of Lancashire Record Office] 6 February 2004 (accession number 9574).

The Standish Family of Duxbury, a branch of the Standish Family of Standish, was descended from Radulphus de Stanedis in the 13th century through Hugh Standish of Duxbury in the 14th century. The manor of Duxbury was a member of the fee of Penwortham. In 1288 it was held in tripartite by Adam de Duxbury, Roger de Bolton and Ellis de Tonge. However, by the early 14th century it had been acquired by the Standish Family. The family's estates were gradually expanded over time to include property and land in the manors of Heapey, Whittle le Woods, Heath Charnock, Anglezarke, Bradley, Wheelton and Withnell. In 1677 Sir Richard Standish was made a baronet and the estate descended to his son, his grandson and his great grandson, Thomas, Thomas and Frank until in 1812 the line came to an end and the manor and other estates went to a distant cousin, Frank Hall, who assumed the name Standish and died without issue in 1840. In 1891-8, however, the manor of Duxbury and the estates were sold by the trustees.
