Administrative / biographical background:

Hornby Castle is situated on top of the right bank of the River Wenning, approximately 1 mile from where it joins the River Lune. In 1086 the Manor of Hornby was in the King's hands but was granted to the Montbegan family soon after. The Nevill family held it throughout the 14th century and it passed to the Stanleys by marriage in the 15th century. In 1713 the lordship was sold to the infamous Francis Charteris and his family sold it in turn to John Marsden of Wennington in 1789. After John Marsden's death in 1826, his steward, George Wright was to retain control until a distant cousin, Reverend Anthony Lister, Vicar of Gargrave, succeeded. The will was contested by Admiral Sandford Tatham, a first cousin, and his claim was eventually confirmed by the House of Lords in 1838. Admiral Tatham died in 1840 and was succeeded by his kinsman Pudsey Dawson. His heir, Richard Pudsey Dawson inherited the estate in 1859 but had to sell it to John Foster, a manufacturer of Bradford
