Administrative / biographical background: |
Introduction The basic unit of the masonic movement is the craft lodge. Above the lodges is the Royal Arch Chapter, and above this the Knights Templars and Knights of Malta, the head of which is the Most Eminent and Supreme Grand Master. The society, which has members both in Great Britain and abroad, is divided into 27 priories or provinces. Each priory has a prior at its head, with a sub-prior; the position of Chancellor is comparable with that of a secretary. The provinces are divided into preceptories, headed by a preceptor, with the registrar acting as secretary. Preceptories were formerly called encampments, reflecting the partly military origins of the movement, at the time of the First Crusade (1095 - 1099). The Society has had a chequered history, but by the late eighteenth century had became officially reconstituted. The Lancashire priory was re-formed in 1848. Geographically it covers the County Palatine, and the pre-1974 counties of Cumberland and Westmorland The Priory meets on an annual basis, and a complete series of the minutes of these meetings has survived back to 1855 when an official record was first kept. |
