The Rusland estate was founded in the 16th century by a cadet branch of the Rawlinsons of Graythwaite whose descendant sold it in 1762 to Thomas Walker whose grand-daughter carried it in 1832 to her husband Charles Dickson Archibald, of a Nova Scotia family.
