Title: LAND DRAINAGE AND COURTS OF SEWERS
Description:

From Deptford to Dungeness there are few parts of the Kentish coast which were never liable to suffer devastation from floods. The care of the Thames Shore, the marshes between Thanet and the mainland and those of the area loosely called Romney Marsh was fundamental to the prosperity and safety of Kent, and with these areas went special responsibilities for the Medway, Swale, Stour and Rother.

The archives of the bodies responsible for these low-lying areas and their adjacent creeks and rivers are remarkably complete from the late sixteenth century. At the present time only those administrative records relating to the Rother valley are unrepresented in the Kent Archives.

The work of the Commissioners for Sewers and kindred bodies continued until the Land Drainage Act, 20-21 Geo. V, c. 44 (1930), by which their duties were taken over by Internal Drainage Boards, while an overall supervision was exercised by the Catchment Board for the area.
