Wray, Sanderson & Co. Ltd., was incorporated in 1907, continuing the seed crushing business in Hull of Charles Creasey Wray and Frank Bernard Sanderson. The company operated as oil extractors, manufacturers of animal feedstuffs and refined oils. Wray, Sanderson & Co. took over the Hull General Warehousing and Transport Co., in 1917, Calders Margarine Co., in 1918 and Sowerby & Co. Ltd., Grimsby also in 1918. In 1919 75% of Wray, Sanderson & Co.'s shares and also the total share capital of Sowerby & Co., were bought by the recently formed United Premier Oil & Cake Co. Wray, Sanderson & Co., sold its holdings in Universal Oil and the Hull General Warehousing Co., to U.P.O.C.C. in 1924. In 1929 Wray, Sanderson & Co., entered into a management agreement with U.P.O.C.C. In 1946 it was decided that for the most advantageous conduct of the business the Premier Oil Extracting Mills and Wray Sanderson & Co., should be operated as one concern under the name of Premier Oil and Cake Mills Ltd., therefore, there was a voluntary winding up of Wray, Sanderson & Co. Wray, Sanderson & Co. (1947) Ltd., was registered as a private company in 1947 to run the old Wray, Sanderson & Co. Ltd

Universal Oil Company Ltd
DBPO/4 [n.d.]
Creator(s):
Universal Oil Company Ltd
Administrative history:
The Universal Oil Co. Ltd., was incorporated in 1911. The company began trading as manufacturers and dealers in oil, glycerine etc., under the name "The African Color Co. Ltd." in 1910 (briefly changing its name to the Anglo African Oil Co.). The African Color Co. was based in Natal with a committee meeting in England fortnightly for the purposes of selling the oil. The decision by the English committee to erect an oil splitting and deoderizing plant in Kynochtown, Essex meant the closure of the plant in South Africa and the registration of the company in England. The Kynochtown site did not prove a success, therefore, when Wray, Sanderson & Co. acquired a one half interest in Universal Oil (1918), the Company sold the Essex plant and transferred to Hull. In 1924 the United Premier Oil & Cake Co., acquired Wray, Sanderson & Co.'s holdings in Universal Oil and by 1930 they were the owners of all the share capital
