Administrative / biographical background:

The Society was founded in September 1898 and wound up in 1974. Membership consisted predominantly of traders and shopkeepers and its risks were mainly shop windows, although it also insured such properties as the YMCA and many Scunthorpe Corporation Offices. The rising cost and number of claims gave rise to financial concern from the 1960s onwards, and the Nypro plant explosion at Flixborough in June 1974 gave the final impetus to winding up
