Administrative / biographical background:

Winn family of Nostell Priory (Yorks) and Appleby Hall. Rowland Winn (1820-93), created 1st Lord St Oswald in 1885, first developed the ironstone beds, and encouraged the establishment of iron and steelworks in Scunthorpe.
