Administrative / biographical background:

"Walden" formed part of the Bishop's Stortford and Hertford circuit in 1831 (see NM10). A Wesleyan chapel was certainly built by 1865 which became part of the North West Essex Mission in 1887.

 

A Primitive Methodist chapel was also erected in Castle Hill, Saffron Walden in 1868 and formed part of the Saffron Walden Primitive Methodist circuit. This chapel was closed in December 1937 and the premises sold in 1939. The proceeds of the sale were allocated to the trustees of the Saffron Walden Common Hill charity.
