Title: Berington Collection
Date: 13th - 19th century
Arrangement:

The archives fall naturally into five main groups. Through acquisition by marriage and other means, estates in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Flintshire and Ireland were added to the parent estate in Little Malvern. This calendar, then, is divided first by the estate from which the documents emanated. Within each group a classification scheme was devised which would most suit the records to which it applies.

The accumulation when received by the Record Office did not reveal any natural archive grouping. In former years it had been extensively examined by a local historian and any such order it may once have had was lost. A complete re-arrangement according to the above plan has been carried out. This is self-explanatory except perhaps for the "Unassociated" sub-division in each estate. These records have no obvious connection with the estate but nevertheless have been identified from various sources of information as belonging thereto.

Administrative / biographical background:

This very fine accumulation of family and estate papers covering nine centuries of local and national history is worthy of especial attention. Through it the student can follow the fortunes of a distinguished Worcestershire family as experienced by succeeding generations of loyal Roman Catholics from the 12th century to the present day. Originating with the Russells of Little Malvern Court, the family enlarged itself through the years - the Wakeman, Williams and Berington families take up the threads of the pattern in turn and leave an almost complete picture of all aspects of social, private and public life.
