Administrative / biographical background:

The records listed here are those of the Edwards family, long resident in Brampton Bryan. The house in which they were found in the summer of 1964 was virtually unaltered from the time of the death of Mr. A H. Edwards, shoemaker and postmaster in the 1920's, and its contents proved to be extremely interesting as representative of the tastes and interests of a village tradesman of the early twentieth century, and the more interesting because Mr. Edwards had been concerned in many local matters through his interest in music and shooting as well as in his trade as a shoemaker and stockist of cycle accessories. From the material found, all the documentary evidence relating to the trades and occupations of his family have been kept, and a selection was made of the books and magazines found, preferably of those relating to his membership of clubs and societies. This interest in music explains the number of pamphlets and programmes for local concerts surviving among his papers. Some parish papers for Brampton Bryan were found and are listed separately.
