Administrative / biographical background:

In 1904 a number of farmers in Lincolnshire paid one Sovereign each to form the Lincolnshire Farmers Union. This Union later became the parent branch of the N.F.U. (founded December 1908). Later in 1904 a few farmers met together at the Smithfield Club Show, to form an Executive for a National Farmers Union.

The Hereford Farmers Union (a combination of the recently formed North and South Herefordshire Farmers' Unions) was formed in 1909, and became a County Branch of the National Farmers' Union in 1921. The first meeting of the Joint Executive Committee of the North and South Herefordshire Farmers Union, was held at the Imperial Hotel Hereford on September 13th 1911.
