Administrative / biographical background:

Records of the South Hants Waterworks Company which was absorbed by the Corporation in 1921. The Company was formed in 1876 to supply water to several parishes between Timsbury and Southampton; the area was extended by later Acts. There were disputes with the Southampton Corporation after the boundary extension of 1895 had brought within the town large parts of the S.H.W. Co's most heavily populated and so most lucrative areas. After several abortive attempts the Corporation acquired the right to purchase the undertaking by an Act of 1921.
