Trespassing in search of game, on land occupied by Jane Bennett of New House, Tormarton

Information given to first-named JP by Edmund Webb, under-gamekeeper to the Duke of Beaufort, on 15 October 1834.

 

Summons delivered by William Carradine, constable of Chipping Sodbury.

 

Offender did not appear.

 

Jane Bennett confirmed that no permission was given.

 

Thomas Webb, gamekeeper to the Duke of Beaufort, deposed that he heard 2 shots, while in a field belonging to William Minett, ran across road to a bank from which he saw offender put a hare into his pocket. Another man ran to a third person and got in his gig calling to offender to drop hare and run away. Witness caught offender who, when asked for the hare, denied there was one. Witness took the pocket and saw the hare.

 

Offender gave name as George Falking. Not satisfied, witness asked a thresher in Mrs Bennett's barn, George Farr of Acton Turville, if he knew offender, Farr identified him as Samuel Wickham, butcher of Chipping Sodbury.

 

Fined £1, to be paid to John Bennett, overseer of the poor of Tormarton, and £1 costs to the informer.

 

Given seven days to pay. In default, to serve one calendar month in Horsley House of Correction.
