Westerleigh Common originally covered an area of 124 acres. In 1903, the land was owned and regulated by Sodbury Rural District Council in accordance with the Commons Act 1899. In 1962 Westerleigh Parish Council purchased the Common for the sum of £1,050. Westerleigh Parish Council registered its ownership under the Commons Registration Act 1965. However, from the 1970s onwards the Council began to sell off small sections of common land for a variety of ventures including a playing field and a new link road. In 1988, all the remaining common land was put up for sale by Westerleigh Parish Council. Local residents of both Westerleigh and Yate strongly objected to the sale and formed the 'Save Our Common' campaign group. In 1989, Northavon District Council became responsible for the management of the Common and subsequently some of the land has been sold to property developers
