Title: | PECULIAR JURISDICTIONS |
Description: |
The Peculiars of Bibury, Bishop's Cleeve and Withington all owed their special jurisdiction to having been manors of the Bishop of Worcester; when the diocese of Gloucester was founded in 1541 these were not incorporated in it. The Rector of each Peculiar exercised jurisdiction through his appointed Official or Chancellor; some Rectors acted as their own Officials. See Wills Proved in Gloucestershire Peculiar Courts (Gloucester City Libraries Local History Pamphlet No. 2), pp. 3-11. Peculiar jurisdiction was abolished in 1847 (Order in Council 17 June 1847; G4/1). |
