Conditions of access:
NOT AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH FOR 130 YEARS AFTER LAST ENTRY IN EACH VOLUME
Arrangement:
[loose at end of volume: 256 pp. for December 'to be indexed']
Main series [no ref. or date]
Contents:
This series survives from 1843, the later volumes (from November 1939) having been retained by the firm. It comprises carbon copies of outgoing correspondence, with an index to recipients at the front of each volume. From 1865, the system of using one volume for each year's correspondence was stopped, presumably because it became too bulky to be practical, and a simple numerical sequence was then adopted. In 1913 a new sequence was begun, possibly to mark R. H. Penley's position as a senior partner following the death of T. T. Vizard in August 1912.
Apart from routine dealings with clients concerning property, testamentary and business affiars, there is also evidence of the partners' involvement with various public bodies and schemes. References are found to duties as clerk to the trustees of local districts of roads, 1840s-1870s (e.g. 1/1 pp. 84 & 161; 1/12 p. 132; 1/23 p. 193; 1/45 p. 607); as treasurer and governor of Dursley National School, 1854 (1/12 p. 951); as honorary secretary to Dursley Fire Engine Committee, 1865 (1/23 p. 341); as an [officer?] for Dursley manorial court leet, 1875 (1/45 p. 267); as trustee or clerk for various charities in Dursley and North Nibley, 1850s-1930s (1/12 p. 200; 1/99 see index; 1/53 p.63; 1/257 pp. 670 & 770). References to schemes (usually relating to their effects on landowners) include proposed inclosures at Stinchcombe, 1865 (1/23 p. 42), Coaley, 1865 & 1875 (1/23 p. 232 & 1/45 p. 565), and Cam, 1875 (1/45 p. 108); new railway lines, especially the Severn Junction Railway, 1865 (1/23 pp. 104 & 145); Dursley town water supply, 1895 (1/99 p. 281); insurance against war damage and compensation for requisitioning, 1939 (1/293 p. 984). (These references were found by checking the contents of sample volumes at roughly 10 year intervals)
