According to Kelly's Directories of Essex , 1878-1937, the Witham Petty Sessional Division comprised the following parishes for this period: Bradwell-juxta-Coggeshall, Great Braxted, Little Braxted, Great Coggeshall, Little Coggeshall, Cressing, Fairstead, Faulkbourne, Feering, Goldhanger, Hatfield Peverel, Inworth, Kelvedon, Markshall, Messing, White Notley, Pattiswick, Rivenhall, Terling, Tollesbury, Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Tolleshunt Knights, Tolleshunt Major, Great Totham, Little Totham, Ulting, Wickham Bishops and Witham. Little Tey formed part of this division up to c.1882. By 1886 it was part of the Lexden and Winstree Division. The parishes of Salcott and Virley are listed as part of the Witham Division in 1937 having previously formed part of the Lexden and Winstree Division, 1878-1933. Both Langford and Heybridge formed part of this division for various periods during 1878 to 1937 but as there is some confusion in the directories over these two parishes the records of both Witham and Dengie Divisions should be consulted throughout (for full explanation see introductory note to Dengie Division).

For the papers of Samuel Shaen of Hatfield Peverel, a justice in the Witham Division, 1829-1854, inc. the printed calendars of meetings of justices for each year see D/DU 139.
