Mid Essex Health Authority was established in 1982, superseding Chelmsford Health District, which had been set up in 1974 under the National Health Service Reorganization Act, 1973. Brentwood, which was part of Chelmsford Health District from 1974 to 1982, did not become part of the new Mid Essex Health Authority, but joined Barking and Havering to form Barking, Havering and Brentwood Health Authority. Black Notley Hospital was administered by North East Essex Health Authority until 1984. Runwell Hospital is administered by Southend Health Authority

Chelmsford Joint Hospital Board (A/HM 1)

Under the Public Health Act, 1875, the Local Government Board could authorize two or more local authorities to act jointly in the provision of hospital accommodation for epidemic diseases. Chelmsford Joint Hospital Board was formed 5 May 1902 by Provisional Order of the Local Government Board, and comprised Chelmsford Borough Council and Chelmsford Rural District Council.

The Board built an isolation hospital in Great Baddow (known as Chelmsford Isolation Hospital), with a unit for smallpox cases in Bakers Lane, West Hanningfield. The Board ceased to exist when the National Health Service Act, 1946, came into force in 1948, and the smallpox unit in West Hanningfield was sold. Chelmsford Isolation Hospital became a National Health Service hospital, and was part of Chelmsford Group Hospital Management Committee. It was later closed, and is now used as the headquarters of Mid Essex Community Health Council

Construction of the present building in New London Road began in 1882, and the hospital was opened in 1883. It became a National Health Service hospital in 1948, and until 1974 was part of Chelmsford Group H.M.C.

William Julien Courtauld Hospital, Braintree (A/HM 4)

This was formerly Braintree and Bocking Cottage Hospital, founded by Mrs George Courtauld in Halstead Road, Bocking in 1871. From 1886 the hospital was run by a committee and aided by public subscriptions. In 1921 the present hospital was built by Mr W.J. Courtauld, and in 1931 the name of the hospital was changed to the William Julien Courtauld Hospital. It was taken over by the National Health Service in 1948, and was part of Chelmsford Group H.M.C.

This was built in 1874 as Maldon Union workhouse. Under the Local Government Act, 1929, control was transferred from the Guardians to the Public Assistance committee of Essex County Council, and wards for the chronic sick were developed. In 1938 the name was changed from Maldon Institution to St. Peter's Hospital. It became a National Health Service hospital in 1948, and was part of Chelmsford Group H.M.C.
