Note:

A manuscript calendar of the Bridport borough records (numbered PQ28 in the present list) was completed in 1903 by Thomas Wainwright. Not all the items listed in this have been found, while many of the existing documents, especially those of later date, were not included by Wainwright; there are also some inaccuracies in his descriptions. "A Brief Guide to the Municipal Records of Bridport", by E S Scroggs, 1953, gives a summary of Wainwright's classes with some additions, but it was not found practicable to keep this classification in the present list. Miss Scroggs also makes some brief remarks on the contents and scope of the collection.

Many documents are marked with physical numbers which are mentioned in Wainwright's calendar, but seem to be unrelated to his arrangement. These have been added in round brackets in the present list after the description of some items only, where it was felt that they might be a useful means of identification.

The Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts described some of the records in the Appendix to their 6th Report, 1877 (see PQ26); references to transcripts or descriptions in this volume appear in the list in the form [H.M.C. p 475].

"The Bridport Borough Records and Ancient Manuscripts" by Thomas Wainwright, 1900, contains a series of articles reprinted from the Bridport News, including transcripts of selected documents (see PQ27). References to this appear in the form [Wainwright p 1]. For Wainwright's work on the records, see PQ26-32.
