Administrative / biographical background: |
The Woollcombe family are known to have been settled in Plympton St Mary from the time of Henry VII. They were then resident at Holland, a farm to the east of Chaddlewood from whence they moved to Challonsleigh in 1584 when John Woollcombe I purchased it from Hannibal Vivian. Thomas Woollcombe II purchased the manor of Bickford Town with the moiety of Hemerdon from the Avents in 1790, and George Woollcombe II purchased the other moiety in 1803. Over the centuries the family has been prominent in public life. William Woollcombe IV was an attorney and town clerk of Plympton St. Maurice in the early eighteenth-century and many individuals have held parish offices. The family has also been involved in municipal life in Plymouth notably Henry Woollcombe II who was Mayor in 1813 and Recorder from 1833 to 1837. The collection reflects the wealth of his papers and is similarly enriched by the records of the military and naval careers pursued by members of the family during the nineteenth-century. |
