Arrangement:

The arrangement of the records in this list roughly follows the three main periods of development of the hospital services in the Plymouth region:

1 From the foundation of many of the voluntary hospitals in the mid-nineteenth century, to the date of the amalgamation of the Plymouth hospitals in 1934.

2 From 1934, with the foundation of the Prince of Wales Hospitals group, to 1948.

3 From the nationalisation of the Health Service in 1948 to the present day.

Within these three periods, the records have been subdivided by either establishment or administrative group, in order to accomodate in a more meaningful way the changes that have taken place, both in the management of the hospitals themselves, and in their funding.

There is, however, a certain amount of overlapping of periods, since records have been retained within their main groupings, in order to facilitate any further reference.
