Administrative / biographical background:

The charity was started by gifts of money and land from three main people. Alice Hatch's gift was 12 acres in Kingston and the Ermington land in Modbury, Devon and £78 19s 1d, Dame Amy Fortescue gave £218 7s 3d in stocks, John Savery Brooking gave the rentcharge of tithes of Worthele estate and other lands in Ermington, Devon. The Mary Dole tithe amounted to £25 per year in 1896.

The object of the tithe was to relieve poor householders in Ermington who had never received parochial relief, and to provide them with a trade and to educate their children and orphans. In 1887 about 34 poor householders were relieved. The funds were administered by an elected group of Trustees or Feoffees.
