Appeal of Lanlivery against order of 31 Mar. 1789 for the removal of William Williams, wife Jane and children William (3), Sarah (18 mo.) and Charles [no age given], from Tywardreath to Lanlivery. Pauper William Williams, on 7 June 1784, was told that Mr James Littleton, farmer, of Lanlivery, wanted a man to work in husbandry. On the road to Mr Littleton's house, W. W. met Mr James Littleton, the son, and told him that he had heard his father wanted a workman. J. L. Jun., agreed, and told him to go to work. W. W. then went on to J. L. senior's house, and told him what J. L. jun. had said. J. L. Sen. also told W. W. to go to work. No terms were agreed until 5 or 6 weeks after, when, being at work with J. L. jun., and William Chapman, labourer, he told J. L. jun., that he had been there long enough to know each others's mind, and that it was time to come to agreement and to know whether he was a weekly or yearly servant, and that he expected £6 per year. If they did not agree, he expected to be paid above common wages at 3s. per week for the time he had been there, as it was in the middle of the hay season. J. L. jun., said that £6 was too much, and he would only agree £5 10s., but his father might do what he pleased. A day or two after, W. W. spoke to the wife of J. L. senior (who was infirm), and asked her whether he should receive £6 per year if he remained in service until 9 June 1785: continued to next sessions.

Appeal of Revd Thomas Carlyon and Elizabeth Veal, widow, against a rate made by Paul on 13 Feb. 1789; appellants proprietors of the Tithe Sheaf and one tenth of all fish brought on shore in the parish. They and their tenants charged as follows:-

Rev. Carlyon & Mrs Veale, the rectorial tithe of Pilchards £0 19s. 10½d.

Edward Paddy (tenant), tithe of hook fish and all other fish except pilchards & herrings in Newlyn £0 5s. 3½d.

Benjamin Harry, Richard Wright & Co. (tenants), tithe of hook fish and all other fish (except pilchards & herrings) in Mousehole £0 2s. 4d.

John Glasson (tenant), tithe of sheaf £0 5s. 10d.

The sum charged was not the object of the appeal, but it was the rateability of fish in proportion to the other property in the parish, the assessment fixed from the annual rents. The appellants contended that the above was not a property, and should be charged in the words 'for tithe', as had happened previously. They were not aware they had ever been charged for fish. The respondents contended that this property had always been rated in Paul as yielding an annual profit, and was rateable: rate confirmed, subject to opinion of the King's Bench.
