Administrative / biographical background:

The manor of Treverbyn covered the northern part of the parish of St. Austell and was divided into two moieties: Treverbyn Courtenay, owned since the sixteenth century by the Duchy of Cornwall, and Treverbyn Trevanion.

In 1852, following the Trevanion bankruptcy, Treverbyn Trevanion was purchased by Joseph Ivimey as trustee on behalf of himself and Thomas and in 1857 they purchased Treverbyn Courtenay from the Duchy. The manor continued in the joint ownership of the Gill and Ivimey families. The manorial waste was extensively developed for china clay working, and also for some metalliferous mining.
