Date: c1150-20th cent
Arrangement:

The arrangement of the Tywardreath documents is similar to that for the main part of the Arundell archive (See CRO AR), with sections for title deeds, manorial records (mainly court rolls) and estate administration, and within these sections arrangement by manors where possible.

ART/1 The title deeds are arranged in chronological order within each manor apart from Porthia manor where they are by tenement and chronologically within each tenement.

ART/2 Note that the final membrane of ART/2/5 is a rental for Trenant manor and that of ART/2/6 records two courts of Porthia manor. The final membrane of ART/2/7 records courts of the secular manor of Tywardreath which did not belong to Tywardreath Priory (See Manor of Tywardreath Prior above).

ART/3/3 - 67 The leases are arranged in chronological order within each manor.

ART/3/68 - 101 The accounting records are divided into receipts, payments out and miscellaneous and arranged chronologically within each of those sections. Several of the accounting records involve Sir John Chamond who was the chief steward of Tywardreath Priory (Rowse, Tudor Cornwall, p. 198.). They include receipts for tithes owing to the king and for papal dues.

ART/3/102 - 123 The priory owned the tithes and glebe of several churches and chantries given it by various donors which were often leased out (See Monasticon, p.47, for list of spiritualities and temporalities). There are such leases for the parishes of St Anthony in Meneage, St Austell, St Blazey, Fowey, Lanlivery, Lostwithiel, Luxilian, St Sampson Golant, Treneglos and Tywardreath in Cornwall and documents concerning the tithe of Woodhuish in Brixham parish, Devon. These are arranged by parish in alphabetical order.

ART/3/124 - 135 Grants of advowsons for the churches of St Anthony in Meneage, St Austell, St Clether, Fowey, Lostwithiel, Treneglos and Tywardreath, arranged in alphabetical order.

ART/3/136 - 153 Grants of pensions (mainly in the form of money from specified manors; sometimes including food, drink and lodging) to various individuals, usually in return for their 'good service and counsel'. These are arranged in chronological order.

ART/4 The correspondence is arranged in chronological order and includes letters to and from the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Bishop of Exeter and Cardinal Wolsey and letters to Pope Leo X. ART/4/14 - 19 record the (unsuccessful) attempts to persuade Prior Thomas Colyns to retire gracefully from office shortly before the Dissolution.

ART/5 The official papers include letters of instruction and notification, dispensations and a grant of indulgence.

Arundell family, Barons Arundell of Wardour

Arundell family of Lanherne, Cornwall

Arundell family of Trerice, Cornwall

Physical description: 7 Subfonds
Custodial history:

The means by which the Tywardreath documents entered the Arundell archive are not entirely clear as the Arundells never owned any of the Tywardreath estates which were first leased to John Grenville (CRO, CA/B44/1) and then sold to the Rashleigh family and the Earl of Hertford (Rowse, Tudor Cornwall, p. 205 and p. 210.). There are, however, several possible explanations.

It might be assumed that the documents formed part of the Dinham archive, having been inherited by the Dinhams from the Cardinhams who had been major patrons of the priory. A few of the early documents involving the priory and the Cardinhams may have come from this source but the suggestion does not hold for the majority as they continue in strength until the eve of the Dissolution, several decades after the Dinhams had died out.

A.L. Rowse, in Tudor Cornwall, mentions that at the time of the Dissolution the Arundells were vying with the Grenvilles and Godolphins to obtain the lands of Tywardreath (Rowse, Tudor Cornwall, pp. 209-10.). Thomas Arundell, founder of the Wardour branch of the family, was for a while in charge of the commission for dissolving the monasteries and would thus have been one of the few people in a position to remove the documents from the priory. It is possible that Thomas arranged for the removal of the documents to Lanherne in anticipation of the acquisition of the priory lands by his family, an acquisition which never materialised.

There is also a possibility that the Arundells came by the documents perfectly legitimately. A document printed in Oliver's Monasticon seems to show that while Grenville held the lands he leased them to Sir John Arundell and Arundell in turn leased them to Laurence Courtenay in 1542 (Oliver, Monasticon, p. 45, no. XXIV.). The Arundells may thus have obtained the Tywardreath documents through holding a lease of priory land for a time, although the documents recording that lease are no longer present in the archive.

Tywardreath Manors and their Tenements

These do not claim to be comprehensive lists of all the tenements of each manor, which varied over the centuries. They contain the tenements found in the title deeds and leases and aim to be a guide to those sections of the archive where arrangement is by tenement. See the manorial rentals in ART/2 and ART/3 for the composition of manors at particular dates and for the identification of tenements as free or conventionary.

For each tenement the modern spelling is given first, followed by the more unusual variants in parentheses, and then the name of the parish in which the tenement is situated. A tenement name in inverted commas is the spelling found in a majority of the documents and means that the modern name has not been identified.

Administrative / biographical background:

The Arundell Archive contains the archive of Tywardreath Priory near Fowey, a Benedictine dependency of the abbey of Saints Sergius and Bacchus at Angers in Brittany. The Tywardreath establishment, dedicated to Saint Andrew, was founded in circa 1088 and flourished until 1536 when it was dissolved by King Henry VIII.

The Tywardreath archive consists of 357 documents ranging in date from the mid 12th century until 1540. From the documents it is clear that the priory's lands were organised into eight manors for purposes of administration:

Manor of St Austell: seat of manor was in St Austell; tenements also in St Stephen in Branel.

Manor of Fentrigan: not an original manor but created as a means of administering the priory's scattered lands in Altarnun, Davidstow, Lesnewth, Otterham, Treneglos, Warbstow, Week St Mary and Whitstone.

Manor of Fowey: seat of manor and all tenements were in Fowey. The borough of Fowey belonged to Tywardreath Priory. The court rolls here are for Fowey manor; it is not clear whether there was also a separate borough court.

Manor of Gready: not an original manor but formed from scattered lands in St Austell, Cardinham, Lanlivery, Lanivet and Luxilian.

Manor of Porthia: not an original manor but formed from scattered lands in St Anthony in Meneage, Gulval, St Ives, Lelant, Madron, Manaccan, Towednack, Zennor and possibly Ludgvan.

Manor of Trenant: seat of manor was in Fowey; tenements also in Tywardreath.

Manor of Trevennen: seat of manor was in Goran; tenements also in St Erme, Goran, St Michael Carhays and Probus.

Manor of Tywardreath Prior: seat of manor was in Tywardreath; tenements also in St Austell, St Endellion, St Enoder, St Sampson Golant, Lanlivery, St Martin by Looe and Menheniot.

In addition to this manor there was also a secular manor of Tywardreath which was completely independent of the priory. Note, however, that the final membrane of one of the court rolls for Tywardreath Prior records three courts of the secular manor, an understandable error as the two manors had the same name, although how it arrived amongst the priory's documents in the first place remains a mystery.

The following is a list of the priors of Tywardreath from the mid 13th century and their dates of office. For more details see Monasticon, pp. 34-36.
