Administrative history:
The ancient parish of Mottram in Longdendale comprised the eight townships of Godley, Hattersley, Hollingworth, Matley, Mottram, Newton, Stayley, and Tintwistle. In the latter township was situated the ancient chapel of Woodhead.
Since the beginning of the nineteenth century the following new parishes have been formed:-

Coal vein under glebe lands of Mottram, with right to lead coal, sink shafts, erect machinery and buildings for the colliery and accommodation of the workmen, to take waggons, carts etc., over the glebe lands, and do all things necessary for the working of a colliery. Right to remove engines and machinery at end of term of lease.
Rent: £30, and £200 for every Cheshire acre exceeding 24 Cheshire perches.
2 to pay any taxes assessed on the mines, to hand over mines to 1 on expiration of lease; to take precautions to ensure that the colliery is safely maintained and properly run; to ensure that no damage is done to existing property by subsidence etc., to fence off working prem. leaving adequate gates; to fence off and fill in disused pits; to clear ground of slack etc. on expiration of lease, and leave the prem. as he found them unless 1 desires the mines to be left open. If the coal is insufficient to warrant the full term of the lease, 2 to end it after the 1st, 8th or 15th year.

Contents:
In Oct 1820, a faculty was granted to erect an organ gallery and organ in Mottram church. The funds for this had been subscribed by the inhabitants and others in the neighbourhood of Mottram. There was £300 left over after the organ was set up so a plot of land was purchased in 1824 and ten cottages erected. The proceeds from these were used to keep the organ in good repair and pay the organist
