Title: CHARITY COMMISSION ACCOUNTS
Description:

The returns are mainly on standard forms and record names of trustees or administrators, endowments and receipts and payments. In some cases, usually hospitals and some ecclesiastical and non-conformist Charities, full printed annual reports were submitted. The presence of such reports is noted in the list. The accounts range in date from 1890 to 1955.

 

The accounts relate to townships within the post-1974 boundaries of Cheshire, with the exception of Chester City Charities which are in the Chester City Record Office.

Administrative / biographical background:

In accordance with the Charitable Trusts Acts of 1853 and 1855, all registered Charities were obliged to render an annual account to the Board of Charity Commissioners. They have been transferred to local record offices under Section 3(6) of the Public Records Act 1958.
