Administrative / biographical background:

A mission was established in Northwich in 1840 and mass was said in a cottage in Northwich near to Pump Stile. By 1852 there were 1,600 Catholics in the area and a chapel formerly used by the Independents was leased in 1854. In 1864 land was purchased to build a new church which was dedicated to St Wilfrid and used by both Protestants and Catholics
