Administrative / biographical background:

In 1851 the new church dedicated to St Michael was opened to relieve the existing church of St Philip and St James, built 1803, to minister to the growing Catholic population of Stockport.

Both churches were badly damaged by anti-Catholic riots in June 1852, and Canon Frith, managing to conceal the Sacrament in St Philip and St James' church, was forced to escape over the roof. In 1862 St Joseph's parish was formed. A resident priest continued to serve St Michael's until 1865, after which date it was administered from St Josephs. There is, as a result, some overlap in the register: marriage entries from 1868, confirmations from 1875 and some baptism entries are for St Joseph's.
