Administrative / biographical background:

The parish of St Paul (sometimes called Newton Moor) was established in 1848, although the church was not begun until 1853 on a site presented by Robert Ashton, a Unitarian, of Hyde Print Works. It was opened in June 1854 and the presbytery and schools were built in the same year.
