Details of DVA
Reference: DVA
Title: VENABLES OF AGDEN COLLECTION
Description:

This collection comprises title deeds, leases and estate papers relating to the Agden estate. This estate centred on property held in Agden, Millington, Mere, Statham, High Leigh, Horton, Hartford, Knutsford and Lymm (Cheshire) and Whiston, Prescot, Halsnead and Witton (Lancashire). The covering dates are 1390-1863.

The moiety of Agden came to the Venables as the result of a settlement of her lands of Ellen, widow of Thomas Warburton of Agden on William Venables and Ellen, his wife in 1401 (see DVA 1/1). The estate remained in the Venables family (augmented by later marriages - see introduction to title deeds section) until it terminated in the direct line in George Venables of Agden, whose sole daughter and heiress, Elizabeth, married Philip Touchet Chetwode of Oakley bart, in 1732.

Some Chetwode material appears in this collection, but the main series of Chetwode records, including deeds and estate maps, and related Agden papers, was deposited at the Chester City Record Office (ref CR 70) by the Chester Archaeological Society, who had received it from Sir Philip Chetwode in 1921. It is not known how or when these two collections became separate.
