RECORDS OF THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE LABOUR PARTY AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT PAPERS

This collection comprises records of the Cambridgeshire Trades Council and Divisional Labour Party (called from 1956 the Cambridgeshire Constituency Labour Party) from its foundation in 1918 to 1966, the Cambridgeshire Federation of Labour Parties from its foundation in 1941 to 1949, papers relating to Chesterton Rural District Council, 1924 to 1936, and to Cambridgeshire County Council (chiefly the Planning Department), 1944 to 1961.

Cambridgeshire Labour Party

Pease, Michael, fl 1927-1961, of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

The records have been well preserved and the collection includes a receipt for the handing over of other documents to Mrs. Pease's successor in office (416/0.25). Many of the items have been roughly dated by Mrs. Pease prior to deposit.

The collection of political papers largely reflects the offices which the depositor and her husband held, and also their wider family connections within the Labour Party, Michael Stewart Pease being the son of the Fabian, Edward Reynolds Pease, and Helen Bowen Pease the daughter of Sir Josiah C. Wedgwood P.C., the Lib-Lab M.P. (Who's Who in Cambridgeshire (1936), pp. 108-9; cf. 416/0.21). Both were members of the executive committee of the County Party for much of the period covered by the collection from 1923 onwards, and held office as follows:

Mr. M. S. Pease: treasurer 1927-31, chairman of the executive committee, 1931-3, vice-president 1933-4, 1946-7, president 1934-5, secretary 1936-7 and 1959-61.

Mrs. H. B. Pease: vice-president 1929-30, president 1930-31, 1940-41, secretary and treasurer 1943-5, treasurer 1945 - c.1955.

The Cambridgeshire Federation of Labour Parties, whose papers compose the second part of the collection, was formed in 1941, principally, it seems, as a means of bringing together the University, Borough and County parties. M. S. Pease was secretary from 1941 to 1949.

The local government papers in the third part of the collection principally derive from M. S. Pease, a Chesterton Rural District Councillor from 1928 to c. 1950. He was closely concerned in planning matters and was chairman of the County Council Rural Area Planning Sub-committee 1949-50.
