Administrative / biographical background:

Caversham local board was formed in January 1891, and became an urban district council under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894. It covered the area defined by the ecclesiastical parish of St Peter

Almost all of this area was transferred to the borough of Reading on 9 November 1911, when the Local Government Board's Provisional Order Confirmation (No. 11) Act 1911 (also known as the Reading (Extension) Order 1911) came into effect. The estate of Caversham Park was instead transferred to Eye and Dunsden civil parish, Oxon, and remained outside the borough until 1977
