Administrative / biographical background:

LOCKINGE ESTATE.

This estate was built up by Lord Overstone in the mid-19th century: his daughter and heir, Harriet Sarah, married Colonel Loyd-Lindsay who was created Baron Wantage in 1895. On Lord Wantage's death, the lands passed to his widow, and subsequently to A.T. Loyd, Esq., and thence to his son, the present owner. For this reason, it is a collection almost exclusively of title deeds with no estate or family papers of any degree of antiquity.
