[The Reading Afternoon Townswomen's Guild was established in January 1948. The Guild was part of a Federation of Guilds which assisted each other if necessary. The Guild had several sub-committees to deal with refreshments and catering, art and handicraft, drama, music, social studies, publications and sales. The Guild Committee would meet monthly and make decisions on purchases, prizes, outings, functions and finance in accordance with reports from the sub-committees. The Committee would then relay ideas and decisions to Guild members at the monthly Guild meetings, Activities included fairs, sales, flowers for funerals and members who were unwell, Christmas parties, pantomimes, plays, raffles, lectures, talks, competitions and lunches. The Guild was closed after 53 years in February 2001 due to a lack of committee members; Guild members were advised to join other Guilds within the federation.] |
