Administrative / biographical background:

[William John Seager (1903-1999) joined Reading Borough Police Force in 1924. He was commended for bravery in 1929 following the rescue of a drowning child, and promoted to Sergeant in 1935 and Inspector in 1939.

 

In 1937/8 he was seconded to Air Raid Precautions, and became Chief ARP Warden for Reading in July 1942. In February 1943 he was involved in the response to the bomb raid on Reading town centre. After the war he returned to police duties, including lecturing at police colleges and work with St John's Ambulance and as police liaison officer for civil defence. He retired in 1954 to at Reading Borstal, but continued as a civil defence warden.]
