Administrative / biographical background:

[Conway Bridge (also known as Dank Archer and Ragged Archer), was built in 1763 and designed by Thomas Pitt, first Lord Camelford (Colvin) engineer, (and) Reverend Humphrey Gainsborough, brother of Thomas Gainsborough. Carrying the Henley to Wargrave road, the bridge is a single arch of cycloplan blocks in imitation of rockwork through which can be seen the River Thames. The rockwork of the bridge and approach walls is said to have come from Reading Abbey. It was built for General Conway of Park Place.]
