Alfred J Smith and Company, Bristol, coal shipping merchants

Physical description: 50 files
Administrative / biographical background:

Alfred J. Smith, Lord Mayor of Bristol in 1905, built up a successful business shipping coal between South Wales and Bristol from 1874. The first ship purchased, the "Iron Duke", was built in 1857, purchased in 1887 and continued working until sunk by a mine in 1941. Another Smith vessel, the "John" was built in 1849, purchased in 1889 and sank in 1945.

The company was involved in more than just a shipping business from Bristol, with a colliery in the Forest of Dean and a china clay hauling business at Fowey, Cornwall. The company survived until 1949 when it was liquidated, "retaining some of its nineteenth century image throughout".
