Administrative / biographical background:

The Cambrian Society was inaugurated on 1 March 1869, with the object of celebrating St. David's Day among the large Welsh community in the city; by an annual dinner. It subsequently became a charitable society also, giving help from its funds to needy Welsh people in Bristol, particularly during the hardship caused by the depression and coal strikes of the 1920's and 1930's.
